Kaizer Chiefs fell in a penalty shootout to Platinum Stars at the FNB Stadium in the Telkom Knockout quarter-finals on Sunday 5-3. The first shot at goal came in the second minute of the game. Tintswalo Tshabalala’s shot for Stars from long range sailed over the target.
Another effort from Robert Ng’ambi for Dikwena put Chiefs under pressure but his header went wide. Siboniso Gaxa tried to score a goal from long range but the shot went over the target. Kingston Nkhatha almost netted from a difficult angle but hit the side netting.
Brilliant Khuzwayo made a an easy save as a low long range effort from Tshabalala fell into his arms. The action was a little slow at the Calabash as the ball stayed in the midfield for long periods. With 30 minutes into the match neither side had scored yet. The first half ended goalless as did the second half as the sides pressed for an opening goal.
Extra-time was on the horizon as the teams could not get the ball behind the net. In the additional 30 minutes the goalkeepers were still not troubled and so it was a penalty shootout that was called for. Stars won the spotkick contest 5-3 to progress to the semi-finals.
