Liverpool beat Norwich City 5-4 in a thrilling English Premier League encounter at Carrow Road on Saturday afternoon. The Reds had looked destined for defeat after going behind 3-1 six minutes into the second stanza but did well to level matters, setting the match up for an amazing finish as Adam Lallana stole the points for the Merseysiders right at the end after Sebestian Bassong had equalised two minutes into added time for the hosts.
The Canaries had a bright start to the match and new boy Stephen Naismith was eager to exert himself as an attacking threat. At the other end, the visitors were struggling to get their false-nine, Roberto Firminoo into the match but Jordan Ibe was proving a handful for the hosts, causing plenty of problems with his crosses and direct running. In the 16th minute, Firmino finally got a sniff and the Reds very nearly opened the scoring as Bassong skied his clearance over the bar.
One minute later, the Reds were at it again as brilliant build-up play allowed James Milner to set up Firmino for an untidy but effective finish. The momentum had swung the visitors’ way, however in the 28th minute Dieumerci Mbokani levelled matters with a flamboyant back-heel to regain the momentum for the home team. It was a delightful first half performance from Alex Neil’s men, yet with the half-time whistle nearing it looked as though the spoils would be shared.
The final say of the half would go to Liverpool nemesis Naismith as he slotted the visitors ahead from a tight angle on debut with only two minutes remaining. After the break, Norwich extended their lead from the penalty spot through Wes Hoolahan after Alberto Moreno had fouled Naismith inside the box. At 3-1, the odds were stacking up against Juergen Klopp’s men but they responded well, pulling one back through Jordan Henderson in the 55th minute and following it up with an equaliser seven minutes later, Firmino bagging his second with a well worked team goal.
Despite Norwich having a cracker of a game, they were finding it difficult to contain Liverpool’s attack and it was difficult to predict what would happen next. In fact, Russel Martin’s back pass was certainly not expected and James Milner took full advantage of the defender’s error as he raced toward goal in the 75th minute to put the Mereseysiders ahead once more. The game had been relatively quiet with episodes of excitement from time to time and Norwich were doing very little to find their way back into this match however it was the visitors who looked more likely to net a fifth, yet they conceded instead two minutes into added time when Bassong latched onto a loose ball following a free kick.
The crowd at Carrow Road roared as they thought their team had snatched a late draw, but with added time almost up, Lallana stole a fifth for Liverpool up the other end and his late volley proved to be the winner as Ruddy looked on in despair as the ball passed him into the net.
