Western Province recorded a bonus point victory as it defeated Griquas 33-15 in an Absa Currie Cup encounter at Newlands on Saturday. Both teams traded blows early in the match but it was the Northern Cape side that took the lead in the 12th minute after Steven Kitshoff was pinged for illegal scrummaging and Clinton Swart slotted over the resulting penalty. The hosts drew level soon afterwards through a Nick Groom penalty after as the visitors were penalised for not rolling away from a Province attacking maul.
They were dealt a further blow as Carel Greeff was sent to the sin bin for a dangerous tackle on Nizaam Carr. The men in blue and white took advantage of the extra man as they scored a brilliantly worked try down the the left hand side which was scored and converted by the Cape number ten. Hawies Fourie’s men did keep themselves within touching distance with two consecutive penalties from Swart.
The Capetonians hit back straight away before the break to head into half-time with a 13-9 lead. After the break Swart and company took a two point lead as they opened the proceedings with two spot kicks from their number 12. However their lead did not last very long as the home side scored three unanswered tries from Rynhardt Elstad, Jaco Taute and Robert Du Preez as they registered a 33-15 victory with a bonus point.
