Former US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki is out of the 2015 US Open after crashing out in the women’s singles second round Petra Cetkovska on Thursday in New York. The Dane was defeated 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 in three hours and two minutes at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The fourth seed won just 58% of her first serve, and 40% of second serve points as the Czech, who hit 61 winners compared to Wozniacki’s 23, progresses to a third round clash against Flavia Pennetta.
Fellow Czech Petra Kvitova had no problems in her second round clash against Nicole Gibbs. The fifth seed defeated the American 6-3, 6-4 in 70 minutes at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. The two-time Wimbledon winner will come up against Anna Schmiedlova in the next round.
Second seed Simona Halep cruised through to the singles third round thanks to a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Kateryna Bondarenko. The Romanian took 77 minutes to wrap up the second round fixture at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, winning 78% of her first serve points. Halep will play Shelby Rogers next at Flushing Meadows.
Garbine Muguruza was also a second round casualty in the Big Apple. The Wimbledon runner-up fell 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 to Johanna Konta on Court 17. The Spaniard won just 35% of the points on her second serve and committed a criminal 59 unforced errors on her way to an early exit. Konta will play Andrea Petkovic next.
