Wolfsburg cemented their place in the Round of 16 of the Uefa Champions League as the group winners with a 3-2 victory over an unconvincing Manchester United, who as a result crashed out of the competition at the VFL Wolfsburg Arena on Tuesday. In an action packed opening 45 minutes the visitors kicked things off in the 10th minute when Juan Mata threaded one through for Anthony Martial who beat the offside trap to put the men from Manchester ahead. Their lead however did not last very long as four minutes later a Rodriguez free kick was taken on the run by Naldo to level things.
The Germans broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Vierinha simply finished a brilliant build up from the home side. In the closing stages of the half the men from Old Trafford looked to have drawn level through a Jessie Lingard goal but their celebrations were cut short when the goal was disallowed due to Mata being adjudged to have interfered with play from an offside decision. When play resumed the men in red started positively in the opening 62 minutes with an acrobatic attempt from Memphis who could not manage to steer it goalwards but rather just wide.
In a busy passage of four minutes the Manchester United shotstopper was under the pump having to fend off Andre Schuerlle, Maximillian Arnold and Max Kruse. The English side was handed a life line in the 82nd minute when Josua Guilavogui flicked one into his own net from a corner for the equaliser however once again parity did not last long as Naldo headed home at the other end from a corner to inch ahead at 3-2. Louis Van Gaal’s charges were unable to impact on the score line any further as they went down 3-2 to their German opponents and crashed out of the Champions League and will have to settle for playing in the Europa League.
The hosts progressed into the round of 16 as group winners.
