Bidvest Wits have ended Orlando Pirates’ winning streak after beating the Sea Robbers 1-0 at the Bidvest Stadium in the Absa Premiership. The win for Wits means they have closed the gap from league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to four points. Pirates’ Brighton Mhlongo was very brave with his goalkeeping in the early stages of the match, throwing himself at every shot and making life difficult for Wits’ attack.
The Clever Boys were combining very well and put plenty of pressure on the Buccaneers. James Keene was the one who proved the most challenging to Eric Tinkler’s team as he was in front every chance he got, even taking a long shot when he saw Mhlongo off his goal line but he missed. They eventually went ahead just before the half-hour mark when Keene scored from close range.
It remained 1-0 until the end of the match even though Tinkler’s troops tried their best to equalise. The home defence was just too tight at the back, refusing to let a goal in. The conditions were difficult for the players since it was raining and the wet pitch further complicated matters.
Gavin Hunt’s men are clearly a force to be reckoned with this season as this is their fifth successive win but can they catch Sundowns?
