Western Province beat the EP Kings 35-16 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on the opening night of the 2014 Absa Currie Cup on Friday. The first half was started off by the hosts. Pat Howard scored the first try of the new season and Demetri Catrakilis kicked the conversion.
Scott Van Breda scored six easy points for his team as Province were found wanting with too many offsides and three yellow cards; two in the first half to Manuel Carizza and Pat Cilliers. Luke Watson grazed the floor with a try for the Kings to hand the PE side the lead. The first half ended with Carlos Spencer’s side narrowly leading 11-10.
Catrakilis started the second half and with the Cape Town side having all their players back on the park it seemed inevitable for a try to arrive. Sure enough, it was Nizaam Carr who powered his way over. Kevin Luiters stretched to the ground and score the third try for the visitors before Cheslin Kolbe dived over for the bonus point try.
The game ended 35-16 to hand Allister Coetzee the perfect start to the new season.
