Western Province hammered the Eastern Province Kings 49-14 in an Absa Currie Cup Premier Division clash at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday evening. Allister Coetzee’s troops showed no mercy from the word go, tormenting their opponents through all angles. Within the opening 20 minutes Juan De Jongh and Siya Kolisi had crossed the line to set the stage for Demetri Catrakilis to convert and the 25-year old did not disappoint.
De Jongh added a second to his name in the 22nd minute as the Kings failed to get going. Catrakilis buried the conversion to make it 21-0. The erratic Kings did get their name on the score sheet before half-time through Paul Schoeman. Scott Van Breda slotted home a conversation to make it 21-7 at the break. The home side continued to dictate matters in the second stanza and reaped the rewards in the 48th minute when Cheslin Kolbe brilliantly gave his side a five-pointer to make it 28-7 and secure a bonus point.
Kobus Van Wyk put the game beyond doubt in the 59th minute feasting on a mistake by Carlos Spencer’s men to make it 35-7. Rynhardt Elstad rubbed salt in to the visitor’s wounds in the 72nd minute when he dived over the line to make it 42-7 after a well taken Kurt Coleman conversion. Kolisi added another try to his name late in the second stanza to help his side bag maximum points and extend their lead at the top of the standings despite a late consolation Tim Whitehead five-pointer.
Final score 49-14 in favour of the home side.
