West Ham United beat Crystal Palace 3-1 on their home turf at Selhurst Park on Saturday in the English Premier League. The game started off slowly but the home side looked more dangerous going forward as the first chance of the tie fell to Fraizer Campbell who saw his headed effort saved in the bottom corner by West Ham’s goalkeeper. Ten minutes into the game the visitors started to take control of the game and Stewart Downing saw his free kick from outside the box blocked by Palace’s defence.
The goal would eventually come on 34 minutes courtesy of Mauro Zarate who struck a wonderful effort from outside the box and left the keeper shocked. The visitors continued to press for the second goal but Joey O’Brien’s free kick went wide and that gave the home side a chance to re-group. The Hammers would soon double their advantage in the 38th minute through former Liverpool midfielder Downing who lashed a thunderous left-footed strike from outside the box to the bottom corner.
Palace would pull one back three minutes into the second stanza through Marouane Chamakh with a wonderful controlled effort to the bottom corner again to make the score line 2-1. The Eagles’ chances to level matters would be dashed by Carlton Cole who gave the away side the third goal to make it 3-1 and see them leave South London heading east with all three points.
