The Namibian Rugby Union has confirmed the short-term appointment of two former Welsh internationals to support the Welwitchias on their Northern Hemisphere Tour. Former Wales captain Phil Davies has been appointed as a technical advisor with another former Dragons international Wayne Proctor, as strength and conditioning consultant. The pair recently visited Windhoek where they assisted Namibia in their preparations for the international against Germany.
Davies and Proctor joined the team in Abergele, Wales on Monday and have been working with the squad in their build-up to Friday evening’s Test match against Canada in Colwyn Bay. They attended last weekend’s match between Canada and the Championship XV in Worcester to analyse the Canadians’ performance. Namibian Rugby Union CEO, Sybrand De Beer, said Davies and Proctor were invited to join the senior team’s coaching staff in a support role following the African Qualification Tournament in Madagascar in July, “We held a review meeting with the coaching staff after the tournament in Madagascar to establish what was required to assist them in their planning and execution for our World Cup campaign”.
De Beer said the coaching staff indicated that they would welcome the input and advice of someone who had played at the highest level, “Phil played in 48 test matches for Wales, including the 1987 and 1991 Rugby World Cup tournaments, and spent two seasons with the Cardiff Blues. His experience and knowledge of local conditions will be crucial in the Welwitchias’ preparation for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in the United Kingdom.” In addition to Rugby World Cup preparations Davies and Proctor will form part of the team tasked to ensure that a World Cup legacy program will be put in place. “It is important that following the 2015 Rugby World Cup we land on our feet and implement a program to ensure we have continuity going through to the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup tournaments” said De Beer.
De Beer added that the board of the NRU approved their appointment on condition that a performance review would be done after every phase of Namibia’s preparation for the World Cup. The strength and conditioning consultant, Wayne Proctor, played 39 times for Wales and until last year was a member of the Wales Sevens team coaching staff. Proctor will be part of the coaching staff for all three matches on tour but Davies will not travel with the team to France and England.
