A solitary Anthony Martial goal helped Manchester United to a 1-0 victory over Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday. The hosts dominated the possession stats in the opening 45 with seven attempts on goal however none were on target. For the visitors, they did not see much of the ball and only had one attempt to speak of which was also off target.
Neither side was really able to find a breakthrough as the half came to an end. In the second stanza the men from Goodison Park looked to be having a much better time of it in the opening few minutes however it was the Red Devils that took the lead in the 54th minute when Martial slotted home a Timothy Fosu-Mensah pass. Phil Jagielka could have handed his side an immediate reply however he could only manage to find the crossbar with a thumping header.
The skipper came even closer in the closing stages when the ball fell to him in the crowded penalty area but he was superbly denied by David De Gea who palmed it away. In the closing stages Roberto Martinez’s charges had a good passage of play once again testing the United defence who managed to hold their nerve and saw their side to victory unscathed. As a result Louis Van Gaal’s side move into fifth place, a point behind their cross town rivals.
