Tottenham Hotspur hold a 1-0 advantage in their English League Cup semi-final against Sheffield United after a slender first leg triumph at White Hart Lane on Wednesday. Eric Dier might have put Spurs in front in the 24th minute with a header but Mark Howard was equal to the task diving to his left to force a corner. Emmanuel Adebayor did everything but score eleven minutes later.
From inside the home side’s half, a long ball was played to the Togolese striker, who collected it beautifully with his right foot just inside the box before moving onto his left to blast over the bar. The Blades had a real chance when Ben Davies had given the ball away and Louis Reed played in Stefan Scougall who fired across goal just wide of Michel Vorm in the 40th minute. However it remained goalless at the break.
With some 25 minutes to go Mauricio Pochettino made a double substitute with Roberto Soldado and Mousa Dembele replacing Adebayor and Ryan Mason respectively. In the 72nd minute Soldado had a similar touch of brilliance to that of the Togolese forward but with his second touch Jay McEveley handled and the referee pointed to the spot.
Up stepped Andros Townsend to put the hosts up. The match finished 1-0 as the sides gear up for the second leg next week at Bramall Lane.
