The Absa Premiership contest between Platinum Stars and Moroka Swallows took some time to reach a climax, but it was the Dube Birds who walked away with all three points after a final score of 1-0 in their favour. The 28th minute of the tie nearly produced the opening goal of the encounter when a Swallows counter-attack saw Siyabonga Nomvethe typically cut in from the left to produce a shot that just whizzed over the Stars goal. As the first half drew to an end, both teams seemed to have found their attacking impetus and it was Dikwena midfielder Mduduzi Nyanda who should have broken the deadlock with an injury time attempt that saw Mogakolodi Ngele playing a lovely little pass to Nyanda however, the winger’s shot was straight at the Swallows keeper, former Nigeria international keeper Greg Etafia.
The 55th minute proved to be the deciding one when Swallows winger Felix Obada was able to turn at the edge of the box and dispatch of the ball with a great left-footed shot resulting in the ball ending up in the bottom left corner of the Platinum Stars net. Thus making it 1–0 to the visitors. The belief and the momentum developed after the opening goal and the Birds produce another attempt on goal that should have gifted them a greater lead had it not been for the slight deviation of the ball in going inches wide of the goal after a Dikgang Mabalane shot from the edge of the box.
The remainder of the half saw Stars gathering their resources in an attempt to cause a change in the score-line and they produced a number of good chances that were just not good enough to see them equalise and take the lead. In the end it was Zeca Marques who would get the better of Allan Freese.
