SuperSport United are the 2014 Telkom Knockout champions after a thrilling 3-2 extra time victory over Platinum Stars at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday. Ndumiso Mabena was fouled as early as the first minute. A free kick from Tintswalo Tshabalala was headed away from danger as there would be no early goal.
Vincent Khumalo managed to play Thuso Phala in but the pass was too strong. The 24th minute of the game saw Phala getting a good run but his shot went wide. The first goal came in the 27th minute for Stars thanks to a good strike from Robert Ng’ambi.
SuperSport won a penalty soon after and this was their chance to level matters. Clayton Daniels made no mistake from the spot which made the score 1-1 in the 35th minute as the sides entered the half-time break level. The beginning of the second half started with Tshepo Gumede going into the referee’s book for a bad foul.
Mogakolodi Ngele took a great shot but he hit the side netting as Dikwena searched for the advantage. Vuyo Mere’s free kick was too strong for Eleazar Rodgers. Bradley Grobler’s shot from long range went wide as Matsatsantsa contributed in this seesaw battle. After 90 minutes was up, the game went into extra time.
A foul on Phala saw them get awarded a penalty in the additional 30 minutes. Daniels took the shot and made it two from two to put Gordon Igesund’s side in front. However a counter attack saw Ngele equalise for Allan Freese’s side.
Phala ended the game on a high note when he scored what would be the winning goal for SuperSport. A penalty shootout was avoided as the match ended with SuperSport United crowned the champions of the Telkom Knockout 3-2.
