SuperSport United beat Polokwane City 2-1 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday evening in the Telkom Knockout first round. The opening half was very intriguing with both teams attacking in the first few minutes of the game. All three goals were also scored in the initial 45 minutes.
Thuso Phala scored in the first five minutes of the game. Phala continued running and took the ball away from a hesitant George Chigova to score. The equaliser for the home team came in the 12th minute.
A throughball was played to Puleng Tlolane in the goal area and he caressed it beyond Ronwen Williams. Polokwane was attacking but it was Matsatsantsa who scored goal number two. hala set up the goal for Dove Wome.
Phala went through the defence while the centre backs were ball watching. Wome was in the goal area as Phala crossed the ball to him and he finished it with a quality shot. The first half also saw a red card shown in the 34th minute to SuperSport forward Bradley Grobler.
In the second half City was looking more confident but could not take advantage of the extra man. Williams had to make many saves and he did so to firstly keep Gordon Igesund’s side in the match but also to collect the man of the match award. In the 66th minute Rise and Shine was awarded a penalty but Tlolane’s spot kick was saved by Williams.
In the 75th minute Williams made another superb acrobatic save from a power free kick as Kosta Papic’s players crashed out of the tournament in the opening round.
