In a good game of Absa Premiership football Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Bidvest Wits 4-2 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday. In the first half Wits had most of the ball possession but it was Sundowns who were happy to capitalise on the counter attacks. Downs were first to take the lead with a goal from Cuthbert Malajila in the 21st minute.
The Clever boys were lacking creativity and also had complaints to give to the referee in a relatively quiet first half. At the beginning of the second stanza it was Daine Klate who had a brilliant chance to equalise but failed as Sundowns goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene saved beautifully. It was only in the 63rd minute that Klate levelled with a brilliant header, even though he was under pressure by the Brazilians’ defenders.
There would be great drama in the latter stages of the second half. Man of the match Cuthbert Malajila managed to score goal number two in somewhat fortuitous circumstances. There was no real power in the shot but they all count. Pitso Mosimane’s men netted a third in the 87th minute courtesy of Khama Billat.
With delicate touches, speed and composure, the quality of the third goal was excellent. A few seconds later Teko Modise scored to make it 4-1. Modise’s goal was outstanding with a perfect shot that found the left corner of the goal net.
Gavin Hunt cut a frustrated figure on the Clever Boys’ bench despie Klate managing a late consolation goal in added time. As for Mosimane and his men, they are up and running with their first win of the new season.
