Mamelodi Sundowns assumed top spot of the Absa Premiership with an emphatic 3-0 beating of relegation-threatened Maritzburg United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday. Goals from Themba Zwane, Tebogo Langerman and evergreen Surprise Moriri ensured that the Tshwane giants wrested top spot from Bidvest Wits. The Brazilians once again displayed pure attacking venom against Clive Barker’s charges who had no antidote to Pitso Mosimane’s tactical approach.
As early as the ninth minute the Pretoria-based team made their intentions clear of plucking all three points when Zwane lashed in the opener from the edge of the box after an inch-perfect pass from midfield maestro Teko Modise. Seven minutes later, defender Langerman controlled a well-flighted crossed before he left his marker for dead and fired in a left footer.
Abafana ba Style took the game to a different level as they strung passes around with cheeky ease. The second half began in the same fashion the first half had ended. Maritzburg had only goalkeeper Virgil Vries and also poor finishing from the Masandawana attack to thank because the outcome could have been worse.
Wily old Barker threw in a few fresh legs but they could no make an impact. But when Mosimane brought on Moriri, the veteran seized the opportunity to roll back the years with a sublime finish to grab all three points for the Brazilians.
