Sundowns Still In It

Mamelodi Sundowns closed in on the Absa Premiership log leaders with 1-0 victory over Polokwane City at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday evening.  Rodney Ramagalela should have opened the scoring in the ninth minute but Modiri Marumo produced brilliant reflexes to deny him an opener.  There was no denying Teko Modise in the 17th minute as he pounced in from a rebound after Surprise Moriri’s initial shot was cleared off the line by City’s defence.  The home side continued to pile pressure on their opponents but failed to increase their lead.  Even a Hlompo Kekana trademark shot in the 46th minute could not double Masandawana’s lead heading into the break.

Wayne Sandilands had to wait until the 50th minute to be tested as the Brazilians continued to dominate play.  Lebohang Mokoena made a great run and got behind the Polokwane defence in the 55th minute but the resulting shot was comfortably saved by the keeper.  Ramahlwe Mphahlele set up Moriri in the 67th minute but his shot went over the bar.  City almost found an equaliser in the 71st when great combination play resulted in a brilliant header by Puleng Tlolane but Sandilands was up to the task.  Three minutes later Sundowns had a chance to bury their visitors through Anthony Laffor but his tame shot was saved by the keeper.

Modise’s solitary strike proved to be enough to hand Masandawana maximum points to keep their title hopes alive.  Downs are now six points behind log leaders Kaizer Chiefs and could well be the number one contenders as Bidvest Wits dropped points at home against Free State Stars, going down 3-1.
