Mamelodi Sundowns stretched its lead to 10 points in the Absa Premiership standings after recording a 2-0 win over their Tswhane rivals SuperSport United on Tuesday at the Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe Stadium. Both teams were flying high considering that Sundowns overcame Chicken Innsand SuperSport humiliated struggling Jomo Cosmos over the weekend. Colombian striker Leonardo Castro reacted quickly following a mistake at the back but, Ronwen Williams came out to make the save.
Khama Billiat did all the hard work finding Castro with a perfect pass, but the South American could not connect. The first chance for the home side fell to Jerome Brockie but Denis Onyango dealt with that easily. The heavy rain and lightning forced play to stop for 30 minutes before Asavela Mbekile had nonchalantly finished to break the deadline in the 39th minute, soon after play resumed.
Pitso Mosimane was a happy coach to lead 1-0 at the break. United came into the second stanza hoping to level matters. In the 57th minute, Kingston Nkhatha was denied by Onyango as Thuso Phala provided a great cross. All that momentum built up by Stuart Baxter’s boys was undone by Billiat’s goal in the last 15 minutes.
In the end, the Brazilians came on top in the Pretoria derby once again. It also means they are yet to lose a capital clash since 2013.
