Mamelodi Sundowns progressed to the next round of the CAF Champions League following a 2-0 victory and 2-1 aggregate scoreline at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night against Chicken Inn. The Brazilians were out to redeem themselves following a disappointing 1-0 loss to Zimbabwe side last week. Pitso Mosimane’s men took to the field knowing that only a victory would be enough for them to go through.
The home side took control of the game from the onset but failed to find a goal. It was end-to-end stuff inside the first half but the deadlock remained unbroken at the half-hour mark. In the 34th minute Bafana Ba Style took the lead through a Wayne Arendse header.
The seasoned defender was at the end of a well-taken Khama Billiat free kick. Masandawana held on to their lead by the time of the break. In the 49th minute, Anthony Laffor navigated his way into the box but failed to find the target as his attempt hit the side netting. The two sides had the crowd on the edge of their seats at the hour mark as they dished out end-to-end stuff.
Despite Downs having the upper hand on the night, the scoreline remained deadlocked at 1-1 on aggregate. In the 71st minute, Mosimane’s men came close to doubling the lead following a goal mouth scramble but the Zimbabweans managed to clear their lines. The travellers almost stole the game away from the hosts in the 83rd minute but Denis Onyango pulled off a superb double save to keep his side in the game.
In the dying minutes of the encounter, Ka Bo Yellow looked more like scoring and their persistence saw Inn committing a foal inside the area. Billiat was the victim as Katlego Mashego slotted home from 12-yards out to send the Brazilians through.
