A solitary Anthony Laffor strike helped maintain Mamelodi Sundowns’ unbeaten run with a 1-0 victory over Chippa United in their Absa Premiership encounter at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednesday. A very frustrating opening 45 minutes for both sides saw neither of them able to find a way through the opposition defences. There were plenty of errors from both sides as each side conceded fouls on many occasions but neither was able to convert their set pieces.
Both sides’ goalkeepers were kept busy but neither were troubled enough to force them to make any telling saves. In the second stanza the Chilli Boys had a decent chance through Eric Chipeta who sent his shot goalwards but Denis Onyango held on tight. The Brazilians had a few chances of their own that were not clear cut either however minutes past the hour mark Laffor slotted a Bongani Zungu cross home with his right foot to give his side a 1-0 lead.
The home side looked to hit back straight away with a Rhulani Manzini’s attempt that just went wide. Ernst Middendorp’s side tried their best to find an equaliser however it was a step too far at the end as they went down 1-0. Pitso Mosimane’s men move to 20 points and move up the table to second position and for the Nelson Mandela Bay side they remain in eighth position without adding to their tally.
