The Mpumalanga Sunbirds woes continued on the fourth weekend of the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup at the Pretoria University Sports Centre when they were badly beaten by the Diamonds. The team from the Northern Cape won the match by 55 goals to 35, after leading 41-25 at halftime. But the Sunbirds can take heart from the fact that the margin of defeat was considerably smaller than in the first round, when the Diamonds beat them 59-29.
After seven matches, the Sunbirds are still without a win, and will drop out of the competition after this weekend. The Diamonds dominated throughout the match, and former Spar Proteas goalshooter, Claudia Booysen (formerly Basson), once more showed her class, scoring most of her team’s goals. Her Sunbirds counterpart, Sibongile Mashiyane, also had a good game – good enough to earn her the player of the match award.
Sunbirds coach Julie Oosthuizen said despite the loss her team had shown significant improvement, “We had a great third quarter and if we could have been that good in other quarters it would have been a different game. We have lots of positives to take from this performance.”
