The Stormers beat the Cheetahs 20-10 in a dreary Super Rugby encounter in Bloemfontein on Saturday. By the 20th minute the home side was trailing by seven points. It did not take long for Franco Smith’s men to hit back though and in the 22nd minute they levelled matters through a Francois Venter try.
As expected, it was a gruesome encounter as the two sides were having a go at each other. In the 31st minute the Cheetahs pulled a massive scrum that saw them turning it over to win a penalty. The Free State-based outfit tried all tactics possible to take the lead by the break but the Cape franchise refused to cave in and 7-7 is how things stood at the interval.
The opening half only produced two tries and two conversions, and the second stanza kicked off at the very same lacklustre pace. In the 53rd minute, the 14 men of the Cheetahs were punished as Sikhumbuzo Notshe crossed over the line to hand his side the lead. In the 67th minute, the home side reduced the deficit through the foot of Fred Zeilinga to make it 14-10.
Two late penalties for Robbie Fleck’s charges secured them a 20-10 victory. All in all it was a dull encounter but the winners managed to capitalise on their chances.
