The Stormers secured a 33-9 victory over the Bulls in a one-sided Super Rugby encounter at Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday. The Bulls fielded four debutants but showed no signs of being rookies as they drew first blood through a Francois Brummer penalty. The home side refused to be pushed back and levelled matters shortly after through a Robert Du Preez three-pointer.
The two sides were having a go at each other but could not find the final pass to cross the line and so 6-6 is how things stood at the half-hour mark. All in all, the first stanza proved to be a Du Preez-Brummer show, with the former making it 9-6 to his side at the break. Shortly after the restart, Robbie Fleck’s side scored the first try of the match.
As if his debut was not great already, Du Preez sold a dummy before going over the line and then converted to make it 19-9. The match continued to be played at a high tempo. In the 66th minute, Du Preez converted Eben Etzebeth’s hard-earned try to make it 26-9. In the 77th minute, Scara Ntubeni knocked the final nail in the coffin as he went over the line for his side and secured the bonus point.
Du Preez was at it again with another well-taken conversion. As the siren sounded the Stormers had done enough to secure a 33-9 victory and claim a first round victory over their rivals.
