This is often the time of the year when football fans, myself very much included, do not know what to do with themselves. All the major league seasons have concluded and bar one or two major cup finals it appears to be all over. Well that is not entirely accurate.
We are in the midst of the Cosafa Cup with the Uefa Champions League final and FA Cup finals still to come. This will give us something to talk about at work for the next fortnight and then one of my favourite tournaments kicks off on the 8th of June – the Copa America. Chile hosts this year’s edition and I for one think they have a damn fine chance at taking the title. Moreover Argentina and Colombia are expected to be strong and all evidence suggests Brazil are playing well too. Plus you just know Uruguay will be there or thereabouts and there is always a surprise in what is probably the world’s most competitive confederation.
Just in case footy is not your bag, there’s a sprinkling of decent cricket on with a beleaguered England facing New Zealand before The Ashes. Super Rugby is still on the go with The Rugby Championship still to come and if you are persuaded by sports Stateside then the NBA Finals are almost upon us.
Not forgetting two little tournaments called Roland Garros and Wimbledon on the tennis front and golf’s US Open and Open Championship and I would say there is more than enough to sustain us until the preseason friendlies kick off in July. And on that note I pray that my beloved Newcastle United make outstanding decisions in the coming weeks and months in terms of transfers and a managerial candidate because my goodness, I do not wish to go through a season run-in like again like the one we just had. After all, I desire to live and long and fruitful life.
