Start Your Engines! F1 Preview

Melbourne, Australia, is the setting for the first race of the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship.  This season is already regarded as the most unpredictable of all so far, which we can safely attribute to all the rule changes implemented by the FIA.

The most significant change must be that of the power-plant.  Instead of the old 2.4-litre V8 engines the teams will now use 1.6-litre V6 engines.  They will also have two instead of one KERS systems which will provide a power-boost for 33 seconds per lap.  All these changes will result in the cars using 35% less fuel per race which  I am sure will make the environmentally-conscious happy.  There is also a change to the points system which will see double points being awarded for the last race of the season.  This should keep things interesting until the end.

As far as teams go there were also a couple of changes in personnel.  Mark Webber retired from F1 and is replaced by Daniel Ricciardo who will team up with defending champion Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull.  The other change of note is Felipe Massa leaving Ferrari after eight years of service to join Williams and Kimi Raikkonen leaving Lotus to fill Massa’s seat at Ferrari alongside nemesis Fernando Alonso.  It will be interesting to see how Kimi and Fernando work together.  With both being former champions and both being contenders for the championship it almost reminds me of the Senna-Prost partnership back in the late 80’s.  I’ll keep a close eye on the guys from Maranello this year.

As for Sunday’s race, I would not want to make any predictions.  Team Red Bull has been struggling in the pre-season testing and many believe their dominance is a thing of the past.  The new regulations meant that all the teams had to design and build new systems so we can expect that everything won’t be running smoothly from the word go.  Everything adds up to what should be a very exciting 2014 F1 season which will stretch over 19 races and conclude in Abu Dhabi on the 23rd of November.
