Orlando Pirates have been held 1-1 by Platinum Stars at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Saturday in the Absa Premiership. The first half was packed with shots by both sides, but more by the visitors who managed to put pressure on the home team but the hosts were able to keep up and clear the set pieces by the opposition. The Buccaneers were dominating ball possession but despite this they were unable to make the breakthrough as Stars were strong in defence.
In the 18th minute what looked like a good effort on goal went wide off target as Thabo Matlaba hit a low shot. Six minutes later Matlaba unleashed another low effort but it was easy for Dikwena keeper Mbongeni Mzimela to save. The Sea Robbers were first on the score board in the 35th minute when Issa Sarr was unmarked in the penalty area, which made it easy for him to slice the ball beyond Mzimela.
Four minutes into the second stanza Cavin Johnson’s men showed the Ghost that they were not down and out. Tintswalo Tshabalala took a free-kick towards the penalty area which found Ndumiso Mabena who headed the ball into the back of the net to equalise. In the 67th minute Kermit Erasmus headed the ball towards Sarr who had a chance to restore the lead for Eric Tinkler’s team, but the Senegalese’s effort went wide.
In the 83rd minute Erasmus had a decent effort at goal but it was easily saved by Mzimela. Despite all the effort by Tinkler’s troops, Johnson’s charges were able to hold on to for a 1-1 draw. Next up for the Soweto giants will be the University of Pretoria on Wednesday evening.
