A three goal blitz in the second half saw Tottenham Hotspur hammer Manchester United 3-0 in their English Premier League encounter at White Hart Lane on Sunday. The opening 45 was a fairly evenly contested half with both sides defending their goals well to head into the the break goalless. There were however glimpses of hope for either side on the attack.
For the hosts Erik Lamela came the closest to turning one in after a scramble in the United penalty area saw the ball popped up to him however he was unable to steer his header goalward. In the case of the men from Manchester, there were not many clear cut chances but rather more half chances that had not quite made it in the final third. The match did however come alive in the second stanza when the home side looked to have found their rhythm and were putting their visitors under some pressure in front of goal.
The breakthrough for Spurs came in the 70th minute when Christian Eriksen cut one across goal to find an oncoming Dele Alli who poked home the opening goal. Mauricio Pochettino’s players were not done just yet as they raced to a 3-0 lead inside five minutes and 46 seconds with goals from Toby Alderweireld and Lamela to reduce Leicester City’s lead at the top of the table to seven points.
