Sporting Lisbon defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 thanks to two late goals from Freddy Montero in the Cape Town Cup final, at the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday. Both teams canceled each other out throughout the duration of the match as they matched each other toe-to-toe for large parts. The 0-0 scoreline said it all.
Alex McCarthy was the busiest of the two goalkeepers in the opening half. In the 37th minute he had to tip over a free kick. His counterpart at the other end Rui Patricio also kept Lisbon in the game with his saves.
The second half began as the first had ended with both teams attacking but both blocking the other’s advances. Two costly mistakes awarded Jorge Jesus’ men the opportunity to pull ahead. The second in the 71st minute gave their opponents a free kick in a deadly position.
Montero went for goal, saw his attempt hit the woodwork then bounce off the back of McCarthy to roll into the back of the net. Three minutes from time Montero made it 2-0 after a defender mistimed an interception. The ball found Islam Slimani who threaded the ball to Montero.
The latter would proceed to chip the ball into the net for a moral boosting win with the new season’s start fast approaching.
