The Southern Stings barely raised a sweat as they swept aside the Limpopo Baobabs to breeze into the final of the second division of the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup at the Pretoria University Sports Centre on Saturday. The final score was 65-17, and a mark of the ease with which the team from the Western Cape dominated play was the fact that the Baobabs scored only two goals in the final quarter. The Stings outclassed the Baobabs in every aspect of play, but it was their centre court team which kept the Baobabs struggling for every point. With 29-10 goal lead at halftime, the Stings were able to rest some of their players ahead of the final later in the day.
The Stings will play the Kingdom Stars in the final, with the winner playing a promotion/relegation match against the Eastern Aloes on Sunday. The Aloes finished at the bottom of the first division, managing only one win in the league stages of the match. At the end of the league section of the competition, Stings coach Bennie Saayman said the Stings did not deserve to be in the second division.
They won every match comfortably and did appear to be in a different class. They are favourites to beat the team from KwaZulu Natal, but if they do go through, they may find the Aloes a much tougher proposition.
