Southampton’s Champions League Dreams In Tatters

Southampton lost the opportunity to go third on the English Premier League log as they lost 1-0 to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns Stadium on Saturday night.  The Saints, who began the season like a house on fire, started to show cracks as West Brom ran rings around them.  This was evident as the home team showed that they are prepared to retain their top flight status by beating the season’s surprise package.

Sadio Berahino took his tally to 17 goals in all competitions with a well taken strike just two minutes into the game.  The Baggies player has been an important figure in the team with his goals; more so at home where he has scored 15 times.  Ronald Koeman’s men controlled the game at times but never really troubled Ben Forster, who enjoyed somewhat of a quiet afternoon as the visitors proved to be toothless in front of goal.

This was proven when Graziano Pelle missed a golden opportunity and shot straight into the arms of Foster in the 85th minute to basically sum up the afternoon that the away side was having.  The Baggies, who are staging a fight in order to remain in the English elite league, claimed all three points thanks to Berahino, who struck the ball with a clean left footed volley.  Southampton remains fifth on the log with 46 points and the dream of a Champions League position remains alive, if not necessarily likely.
