St James’ Park saw Southampton edge Newcastle United 2-1 in an English Premier League encounter on Saturday that sees the Saints retain third spot on the log. An early attempt at goal for Newcastle saw Vurnon Anita missing it to the left. Daryl Janmaat also reached the post but his attempt was blocked.
The Magpies seemed to be seeing most of the opportunities as Ayoze Perez took a shot that was saved. Yoan Gouffran’s right footed shot was also saved. Then in the 14th minute the visitors had a chance but unlike the hosts, they made it count.
Eljero Elia’s right footed shot from the centre of the box found the back of the net. A foul by Graziano Pelle saw the Geordies win a free kick that was taken by Paul Dummett. Jose Fonte’s header missed the post as the ball went a bit too high following a set piece.
The 29th minute saw the Toon netting an equaliser thanks to a touch of the ball by Gouffran. Ronald Koeman’s men were on their way to scoring a second goal but Dusan Tadic was caught off side. The first half ended at 1-1.
As the second half began both teams were looking to edge the lead. Finally in the 62nd minute Elia got the second goal for Koeman’s side. Pelle was found offside in the box as he attempted to take a shot at goal.
Dummett got a clear shot at goal following a corner but the ball went over the post by inches as John Carver’s Tynesiders searched desperately for an equaliser. Pelle almost scored a third goal but his well positioned header bounced off the post.
The game ended with the south coast club winning 2-1 to move to 42 log points.
