Southampton defeated Stoke City 3-2 in a dramatic English League Cup fourth round clash at the Britannia Stadium on Wednesday night. The visitors took an early lead when Graziano Pelle smashed a long range effort in off the post. Ronald Koeman’s boys continued to dominate the game and it paid off when Shane Long struck the ball inside the box and ended a run of 12 games without a goal.
Steven Nzonzi gave Stoke hope after the break with an effortless goal. The Potters continued looking for an equaliser putting pressure on the Saints. Mame Biram Diouf’s header levelled matters and restored confident to his teammates, who were now pressing for a winner. However, Pelle found space and earned a free-kick to drill a winner for Southampton and they held on to reach the quarter finals of the tournament for the first time since the 2003/2004 season.
