South Africa’s Hockey Men Go Down To Australia

South Africa suffered a 6-0 defeat to Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow at the National Hockey Centre in a Pool 1 clash on Monday.  Tim Mitton put Australia in the lead from a well executed baseline move just eight minutes into the game.  Rassie Pieterse made some good saves as the Aussies put pressure on the South Africans with seven shots on target.

Austin Smith was given a green card for a bad tackle which saw him get sent off the pitch for two minutes.  The world champions scored their second goal of the match thanks to Mitton.  A penalty stroke was awarded after Drummond took a direct hit from an Aussie penalty corner.

Cirello shot it home and made the score 3-0.  Andrew Cronje suffered a blow to the head after a drag flick at goal went wide.  Orchard scored the fourth goal for the defending champs.  A good chance came for South Africa but Norris Jones was unlucky and hit the crossbar.

The Australians managed to get a sixth goal before full time.  The reality is that South Africa are ranked at number 12 in the world and the Australians were always going to be too much.  South Africa will face Wales in their next game at the Commonwealth Games.
