The South African Junior Davis Cup team ended off their Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Finals in San Luis Potosi, Mexico on Saturday. Despite a disappointing run by team South Africa seeing them loose to fifth seed Argentina 2-1, third seed Japan 3-0 and Bolivia 2-1 in the group stages of the final, South Africa beat African giants Egypt 3-0 on Sunday. The win over Egypt secured South Africa 15th place over all preventing them from returning home with the wooden spoon.
South Africa came back strongly on the final day’s play of the tournament claiming the number one spot in Africa. Richard Thongoana got South Africa on the board when he earned a hard fought win against Mohammed Aboulkassem 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. In the number one match Damon Kesaris impressed in beating Sheriff Makhlouf 6-2 6-3.
In the dead doubles rubber, Kesaris teamed up with Thongoana and won the opening set 6-2 in a quick 19 minutes over Aboulkassem and Makhlouf when Egypt retired due to Makhlouf pulling a hamstring.
