The Absa Currie Cup saw the Sharks and Golden Lions go head -to-head in Durban on Friday evening with the match ending in a narrow 26-23 win for the hosts. The clash began with the Cell C Sharks flying down the left wing but the ball was soon held up in contact and the Lions won a scrum. The scoreboard finally opened in the 15th minute as Marnitz Boshoff scored a penalty for the Xerox Golden Lions after S’bura Sithole was caught offside in back play.
The first try came in the 23rd minute from the hosts thanks to Andre Esterhuizen which put them in the lead 5-3. Lionel Cronje missed the conversion. The Johannesburg side was given a penalty after the hosts were caught offside.
Boshoff made it count as they took the lead again. A yellow card was shown to Esterhuizen after he led with an elbow in a carry and Johan Ackermann’s men took advantage by extending the lead as Ruan Combrinck scored a try. A conversion followed as Boshoff extended the gap by eight points.
Fred Zeilinga helped the home side close the gap when he scored a penalty in the 37th minute and another one followed right before the half-time whistle. At the break Ackermann’s men were in the lead 13-11. The second half started with Brad MacLeod-Henderson’s side looking to give the Growthpoint Kings Park crowd something to shout about.
The Durbanites were given a penalty because the visitors failed to roll away. Zeilinga put MacLeod-Henderson’s men in the lead again 14-13. Zeilinga scored another penalty after Van der Walt was penalised. The hosts continued putting up points as Zeilinga scored another penalty after the visitors were caught offside.
