The Springbok Seven descended to their lowest point in this year’s HSBC World Series when they lost 12-7 to Scotland in the quarter-finals of the Glasgow Sevens. As the match took place in a mud-spattered and wet field, South Africa were on the wrong side of the whistle and took way too much contact against an enthused Scottish side that have not lost a game this weekend. After absorbing the pressure that flooded against them, the South Africans’ Justin Geduld scored an early try and it appeared as if their experience would be sufficient enough to lead them to victory.
Richie Vernon and Scott Riddell scored tries as the Scots secured their place in the last four of an IRB Sevens Cup tournament for the first time since 2009. The Blitzbokke results mean that the outfit will have to go into the Plate competition, and unfortunately miss out on an ideal opportunity which would have resulted in them facing the winner of Canada and Kenya to pass through to the final.
Neil Powell’s side will now face the loser of Canada and Kenya in the Plate semis.
