Saul Alvarez Set For May 9th Fight

The long wait has ended finally, as former world Champion, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez,  and James “The Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland, clash on May 9th  in the super welterweight division at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.  The event is presented by  Golden Boy Promotions along with  Canelo Promotions, SMS Promotions and Leija Battah Promotions, and it will be broadcast live through HBO World Championship Boxing.  Alvarez says:  ‘I am really happy confirming my bout against James Kirkland.  It will be televised by HBO, and I am sure  be a great one that you will not want to miss.  I am inviting all my fans to witness  a quality match this May 9th at the  Minute Maid Park.  I promise you won’t be disappointed, as I will face a tough fighter. I am sure I will get the victory that night.’

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya said:  ‘We are committed to bring the best fights,  and  a bout between “Canelo”, who is one of the best current  fighters, and Kirkland, who is one of the most feared for his devastating power, it will be an explosive one.  “Canelo” is ready to fight Kirkland, he is willing to offer fans an entertaining show.  Fans from all over the country will attend the Minute Maid Park in Houston this May 9 to enjoy an exciting and epic match.’  Álvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs), aged 24, has faced and defeated top quality boxers including Carlos “Tata” Baldomir, Kermit “The Killer” Cintrón, Sugar Shane Mosley, Austin “No Doubt” Trout, Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo and Erislandy Lara.  He only has  one defeat,  by Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs´) aged 30, is a tough fighter who has built his reputation along with his great punching power.  Kirkland is a WBC Americas Continental former champion.  He has been defeated once by former world champion Nobuhiro Ishida in 2011.  In his last bout in December 2013 he defeated up then unbeaten Glen “Jersey Boy” Tapia by TKO in the 6th round.  He has defeated top boxers including Brian Vera, Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo and Carlos “King” Molina.
