Sara Errani beat Barbora Strycova 6-0, 6-2 in the final of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships at the Dubai Tennis Stadium to be crowned the 2016 champion. It took the Italian just under an hour to defeat the Czech who had a nightmare of an evening. Errani raced into a 3-0 first set lead, courtesy of a generous 29-year-old who was struggling to control her shots.
The fourth game was no different and after going down 40-30, the Czech threw her racquet in frustration. The Italian had kept it simple, sticking to her strengths, spinning and cutting the ball and after 28 minutes of play, Errani sealed the set to love, despite Strycova’s late fight back. The Czech looked more determined in the second set, giving Errani a run for her money in a series of energy-sapping rallies, yet stumbled again, over-hitting her shot and handing the Italian the points.
Errani extended her lead in the second game and the 29-year-old’s confidence was shot. At 2-0, Errani was in control, however Strycova dug deep and showed great character to win the third game, 40-15. Errani responded and went ahead 4-1 in what was a very emotional contest.
Spectators could only look on as Strycova glimpses of brilliance was overshadowed by errors. A magnificent forehand winner was not followed up and the Czech went down 5-1. Errani looked destined for the championship, however, 29-year-old yet again showed great resilience as she demanded respect from the Italian, sucker-punching her in the seventh game and almost repeating the feat in the eighth.
After a hard fought eighth game, Strycova lost concentration and smashed into the net, ending a frustrating match. In the end it was pretty comfortable victory for Errani who sealed the championship with a 6-0, 6-2 straight set victory.
