The International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Tennis South Africa (TSA) have named their officials for the upcoming Davis Cup by BNP Paribas tie between South Africa and Ireland. The tie is to be played at the Irene Country Club outside Pretoria from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 July. The Referee and ITF Representative at the Tie will be experienced umpire, Wael Abbas of Egypt.
The two chair umpires, are Pieter Hoeksma from Pretoria and Steve Kgaphola from Gauteng East, Tembisa. Wael is no stranger to South Africa having officiated at the South Africa vs Monaco Davis Cup tie in 2014 as well as the ATP South African Open (Montecasino) and Soweto Open (Arthur Ashe Tennis Complex). Wael, a professional official on the international circuit has officiated at all four of the Grand Slams, Olympic and Commonwealth Games and is vastly experienced in officiating in Davis Cup competition.
Hoeksma, a white badge official with the ITF started officiating in 1995. He has been chair umpire in the Davis Cup ties staged in Namibia, Botswana and Morocco and has worked the lines at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, 2012 Olympic Games, four Wimbledon Championships and four Australian Open Championships. This will be Steve Kgaphola’s first Davis Cup tie and he recently worked at the Futures in Mozambique. Kgaphola was also chair umpire at the Soweto Open and other local international events.
