The final pool game of the Water Polo competition saw the SA women’s side going down to the highly skilled team from Greece at the FINA World Championships in Kazan on Thursday night. The South Africans lost the match by 20-4. The youngest player on the team, Ruby Versfeld was once again on target as she netted her third and fourth goals of the Championships, while the remaining two goals came from Captain Kelsey White. Coach Brad Rowe says: ‘The team is starting to find more cohesion and played a lot more as a team. We still made a lot of errors but have improved our attack system greatly. We hope to have a good performance against New Zealand next.’
Alexandra Asimaki (five), Eleftheria Plevritou (three), Eleni Xenaki (two), Stefania Charalampidi (two), Christina Kotsia (two), Christina Tsoukala (one), Alkisti Avramidou (one), Antigoni Roumpesi (one), Ioanna Charalampidi (one), Triantafyllia Manolioudaki (one) and Margarita Plevritou (one) scored for the Greek side. The South African ladies finished bottom of group D and will be battling New Zealand in the Elimination Rounds on Saturday. In other results, Chad Ho, Nico Manoussakis and Michelle Weber completed the Open Water 5km team race in 18th place with a combined time of 1:00:31.2.
The men’s Water Polo team will be in action on Friday as they take on Kazakhstan in their final group game, while Julia Vincent and Micaela Bouter will compete in the Diving 3m Springboard preliminaries.
