Hendri Herbst did it again as the fifth day of competition came to a close at the IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow (17th July 2015). Herbst, who won bronze in the S11 100m freestyle earlier on in the event, was over the moon with his second bronze medal, this time in the S11 50m freestyle, clocking a Paralympic Qualification time of 27.04. He says: ‘I am so happy with my improved performance, as I was only fifth in London a few years ago. My preparations for Rio 2016 are certainly on track.’
Swimming to a Paralympic Qualification time of 59.84, Cape Town’s Achmat Hassiem completed the S10 100m butterfly final in seventh position. Hassiem says: ‘I am very pleased with my Paralympic Qualification time and that I was able to go under the minute mark. This is a stepping stone for Rio 2016 and I now know what I need to work on to get into the Paralympic team for next year.’ In other results, Adri Visser concluded the S5 50m freestyle race in 12th place with a time of 51.13, while Challis Wright finished 20th in the SM14 200m individual medley, clocking 2:26.42.
Saturday’s competition will feature Emily Gray in the S9 400m freestyle, Adri Visser in the SM5 200m individual medley as well as Hassiem in the S10 100m freestyle who will also swim in the 4 x 100m medley relay alongside James Bezuidenhout (S9 backstroke), Kevin Paul (SB9 breaststroke) and Hendrik Van Der Merwe (S6 freestyle).
