An unbeaten stand of 99 runs between Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli helped the Royal Challengers Bangalore run a successful chase in the defence of their Indian Premier League (IPL) title with a 10 wicket victory against the Delhi Daredevils at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium on Sunday. The Bengaluru boys won the toss and put the Daredevils outfit in to bat. JP Duminy’s men had a bad start.
They had only two runs on the board before the first wicket fell– that of Shreyus Iyer (0) who got a top edge off the bowling of a Mitchell Starc (3/20) delivery. Mayank Argwal (27) and Duminy (13) tried to build a partnership but it did not last long as Duminy fell at the hands of David Wiese (2/18). A short downfall occurred on 39 runs where the Daredevils lost two wickets; Yuvraj Singh (2) and Angelo Mathews (0) as they found themselves on 39/4.
Kedar Jadhav (33) and Argwal (27) built a partnership of 28 which was ended by Iqbal Abdulla by taking Argwal. Delhi had no partnership over half a century and were all out for 95 runs (18.2 overs). Starc took three wickets, while Wiese and Yarun Aaron took two sticks.
Abdulla and Harshal Patel were also on the board with one wicket each. Having a target of 96 runs to hit from 120 balls the defending champions managed a successful run chase. Gayle (62 not out) and Kohli (35 not out) held a partnership of 99 runs and won the game with 10 wickets.
Bangalore will be securing third place and pocket two points while the Daredevils move to number four.
