Roger Federer is through to the second round at Roland Garros following a comfortable 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alejandro Falla on Sunday. The 2009 champion ousted the Colombian without serving a double fault on Philippe Chartrier Court in the men’s singles first round. The Swiss was flawless in serving eight aces and avoiding a double fault altogether.
Federer also hit 43 winners to the 30 of Falla. The world number two’s countryman Stanislas Wawrinka was also a winner on the day. Wawrinka saw off Turkey’s Marsel Ilhan 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. The eighth seed served 10 aces to the six of the Turk in what would constitute an ace fest on the red dirt in Paris.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was also a winner on day one. Also in action in the French capital was Japan’s Kei Nishikori, who downed local lad Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-3, 7-5, 6-1 on Suzanne-Lenglen Court.
