While the women were falling like flies, the men’s top seeds had few problems on Friday at Roland Garros. 2009 winner Roger Federer beat Dmitry Tursunov 7-5, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. Although the Swiss surrendered the second set he cantered thereafter to a fourth round fixture against Ernests Gulbis.
World number two Novak Djokovic also needed four seeds in his third round clash against Marin Cilic. The Serb saw off the Croat 6-3, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 to book a fourth round meeting against either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Jerzy Janowicz.
There were also wins for Tomas Berdych and Milos Raonic. Berdych saw off Roberto Bautista in four sets 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 while the Canadian needed to go the full distance against France’s Gilles Simon. Raonic overcame Simon 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 to progress.
