Roger Federer Fights Back To Win At Flushing Meadows

Roger Federer staged an incredible comeback to advance to the final four at the US Open where he will face first time semi-finalist Marin Cilic at Flushing Meadows.  In the second men’s singles quarter-final Federer defeated Gael Monfils in an incredible fightback 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 to advance to his first New York semi since 2011.  The number two seed went down by two sets early in the match as the Frenchman was on fire.

The Swiss came back in the third and went on to dominate taking the final two sets against a defeated Monfils to set up a meeting with Marin Cilic.  The Croat defeated Tomas Berdych 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 in the earlier quarter-final.  The number 14 seed took advantage of the Czech’s poor stats in the first two sets and stepped up his game in serving 18 winners and seven aces to take a two sets to love lead.

In the third Berdych found some form and raced to a 4-2 lead but he was unable to defend it as the set eventually went to a tie break that went the way of Croat.   Also in the Big Apple on Thursday, 2012 doubles champions the Bryan brothers Bob and Mike saw off Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at the Athur Ashe Stadium to reach the final in search of their 16th Grand Slam title.

The number one seeds will face Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez who defeated Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo 6-4,6-4.  In the women’s doubles draw the Russian duo of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina continued their great run this year by defeating Kimiko Date-Krumm and Barbora Zahlanova Strycova 7-5, 6-3 on Louis Armstrong to reach their first US Open doubles final.  In the other semi-final former singles world number one Martina Hingis who is on the comeback trail and her partner Flavia Pennetta defeated Sania Mirza and Cara Black to meet Makarova and Vesnina in the final.
