Robin Van Persie scored a brace as Manchester United narrowly defeated Southhampton 2-1 in their English Premier League encounter at St Mary’s on Monday. The visitors took the lead despite not having the bulk of the possession. A misguided pass from Jose Fonte fell to Van Persie who poked his effort passed Fraser Foster in goal.
The home side looked for an equaliser straight away with two chances that came close from Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane. However they did draw level close to the half-time break when Pelle latched on to Dusan Tadic’s rebound and buried his shot from close range. In the second half the Saints came out with a purpose and looked the most likely to score with two early chances from Shane Long at the back post whose attempt was saved by David De Gea and Pelle once more who could only manage to send his shot narrowly over the crossbar.
Despite the bulk of the possession and chances, Ronald Koeman’s charges fell behind once more when Van Persie tapped in a Wayne Rooney free kick at the far post as Louis Van Gaal’s team ran out 2-1 winners. This victory meant the Red Devils move up to third on the log.
