Melbourne Rebels defeated the Blues 42-22 in a Super Rugby match at AAMI Park in Melbourne on Friday. What a difference a year makes as the Melbourne franchise have gone from last season’s wooden spoon holders to a team that has now posted a record-breaking six wins in a row. Special mention to Scott Higginbotham as he broke Owen Finegan’s long-standing franchise record for the most trys by a forward.
Mike Harris, Higginbotham, Colby Fainga’a, Toby Smith, Dom Shipperley and Jack Debreczeni all ran in tries in a dominant display of attacking rugby. Without injured internationals Sean McMahon and Tamati Ellison Melbourne showcased its massive improvement by regrouping early in the second half when the Blues closed to within a point. Instead of panicking they upped the defensive intensity and ran in three tries to put the result beyond doubt in a bonus point win.
The Blues tries were scored by Jamison Gibson-Park, George Moala and Melani Nanai but the day truly belonged to the Rebels.
