Rebels Oust Reds

The Rebels heaped more misery on the struggling Reds by fighting back to grind out a 23-15 Super Rugby victory over the Reds, who had James Horwill sent off after 20 minutes on Friday in Melbourne.  Horwill and Jake Schatz scored early tries to give the Queensland franchise an advantage of 12-3 but the game turned when the Australian lock was shown a red card for striking Paul Alo-Emile when he entered a ruck.  The Melbourne men took advantage with Lopeti Timani, wing Tom English and scrumhalf Nic Stirzaker scoring tries thereafter.

The Brisbanites looked bright and focused in the early exchanges before Horwill’s indiscretion.  The former Wallaby skipper’s swinging arm connecting with the tighthead prop’s head as he tried to clear Rebels players away from a ruck.  Code-hopper Karmichael Hunt made his first appearance for the visitors since a six-week ban for cocaine possession but he was ineffectual.

In the end it was the home side who ran out winners on the night.
