A Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Real Madrid cruised to a 6-1 victory over Schalke 04 at the Stadion Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday night in an epic Uefa Champions League Round of 16 encounter. Los Blancos drew first blood with just twelve minutes on the first half clock through a Karim Benzema strike. The Frenchman was at the receiving end of a brilliant play between Ronaldo and Gareth Bale to give his side a much deserved lead.
The home side almost levelled the score two minutes later but Iker Casilus produced a brilliant save to deny Julian Draxler an equaliser. In the 21st minute Gareth Bale handed Madrid a two goal cushion when he danced past the Schalke defence to net his first of the night. The Miners created a handful of chances heading towards the half hour mark but failed to capitalise as the scoreline remained 2-0 at the break.
Seven minutes into the second half, Ronaldo gave Madrid a healthy 3-0 lead when he netted his tenth goal of the tournament. The Portuguese skinned the home defence and unleashed a powerful shot past Ralf Lahrmann. Carlo Ancelloti’s men were at it again with Benzema netting his second of the night in the 57th minute. In the 69th minute Bale completed his brace. The Welsh international who said when joining Madrid he wanted more Champions League tests passed this one without the help of a memo.
Not to be outdone, Ronaldo netted his brace as well to give the Spanish giants a 6-0 lead before Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored the best goal of the night in the 90th minute, but it was too little too late as Real romped home by six goals to one.
